Main Idea: Communion is a gift and a responsibility.

The early church celebrated communion as part of their gathering for worship. Far from it being a wafer and a thimble of wine, it became a feast shared among some, but withheld from others. Some went away drunk. It was a feast, but not in the spirit Jesus intended.

Paul condemned celebrating the meal in a way that further divided the community. The meal was meant to unite, not divide. Paul explained that the meal was a gift from Jesus, a way to bring the community together and to remind us of what Jesus did for the community.

Paul also explained that the meal was a responsibility. Self-examination prior to the meal was expected. Members of the community were asked to reflect on their behaviors and attitudes, and to becoming a more welcoming and equitable community.

One of the reasons we participate in a communal confession and forgiveness before sharing communion is to give us the opportunity to do the same. It gives us time and space to reflect, consider, and commit to a different way. Then, when we come to the table, we come open and unburdened, ready to make our own community more welcoming and equitable, and ready to receive the gift of forgiveness.
