Psalm 139, Fearfully and Wonderfully Made

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

For it was you who formed my inward parts; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; that I know very well.
— Psalm 139:13-14

I still remember my first glimpse of my daughter. Still remember the first time I held her, took in her tiny fingers, her button nose, her dark hair and eyes. She was, indeed, fearfully and wonderfully made. Suddenly the 21 hours of labor and five-a.m. c-section were irrelevant. Here was this gift beyond imagining. In that moment, I knew very well how wonderful were God’s works.

When we think of ourselves it can be easy to forget that we, too, are fearfully and wonderfully made. Too often we find ourselves disappointed that we don’t match up to some impossible standard of physical beauty. Or we deal with chronic pain or illness or some other infirmity. Or, as I do, we struggle with mental illness of one form or another. Too often we are drawn to see only our deficiencies instead of deeply knowing that we are created by God and loved completely as we are.

Today, know that you are fearfully and wonderfully made—one of God’s wonderful works.

Creating God, help me to love all of me today. Amen.
