Revelation 4:1, What Must Take Place

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

After this I looked, and there in heaven a door stood open! And the first voice, which I had heard speaking to me like a trumpet, said, ‘Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.’
— Revelation 4:1

We, like John, are witnesses. God calls us by name each and every day and shows us the truth of who God is and who we are in relationship to God. God proclaims God’s mercy and love at the same time as God points out all the horrific grief and suffering in our world. Unlike John, who is merely an observer in some heavenly realm, we are in the midst of it, standing among the suffering, overwhelmed by the clamoring of the idols of wealth and security, and experiencing our own daily pains and trials. It can be hard to hear the voice speaking like a trumpet, but it’s there. There are ways to quiet ourselves so that we can be open to the call, to the thrill of that brassy, musical call, and to respond by doing the work of the Spirit in the world and proclaiming the power of God to transform.

How is God calling me to witness to God’s presence in the midst of our suffering world?
