Matthew 26:17-25, Passover Feast

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

When it was evening, he took his place with the twelve; and while they were eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me.” And they became greatly distressed and began to say to him one after another, “Surely not I, Lord?”

We’ve all betrayed Jesus at one time or another, haven’t we? Betrayed. Denied. Scattered. Jesus knew at the last supper that his followers would all fail him in the end. But he ate the Passover with them anyway. He prayed with them and ate and drank with them and sang with them anyway. He loved them anyway.

Jesus loves us that way, too. He knows we will not live up to the example he set. He knows we will deny him in our actions that harm others. He knows we will screw up again and again and again. And he will forgive us again and again and again, and still call us to do better.

We can become distressed and say, “Surely not I, Lord!” but Jesus knows better and so do we. So we are grateful for his unending grace.

How have I betrayed or denied Jesus? Do I feel that I have been forgiven?
