2 Kings 23:15-20, Josiah’s Reformation, Part II

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Moreover, the altar at Bethel, the high place erected by Jeroboam son of Nebat, who caused Israel to sin—he pulled down that altar along with the high place. He burned the high place, crushing it to dust; he also burned the sacred pole.

Josiah needed to completely eradicate all the trappings of Israel’s generations of sinfulness against God. It was not enough to proclaim a return to the covenant. Action had to be taken to clean out what had been twisted and corrupted, to create a blank slate onto which a new way could be built.

When I defy God, when self-centeredness causes me to harm others or fail to act on behalf of those in need, I also have to take action. I can’t just apologize and move on as if words are all that is required. I have to work to clean out what has been twisted and corrupted in order to be made new.

But, of course, I can’t do this on my own. Only God can give me the ability to make amends—to amend (change) myself and to amend (repair) the damage. And by God’s grace, I can be renewed and returned to a right relationship with God and others.

Are there places in my life that need to be made new?
