2 Kings 23:4-14, Josiah’s Reformation Part I (2019)

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

The king commanded the high priest Hilkiah, the priests of the second order, and the guardians of the threshold, to bring out of the temple of the Lord all the vessels made for Baal, for Asherah, and for all the host of heaven; he burned them outside Jerusalem in the fields of the Kidron, and carried their ashes to Bethel.

I’m an armchair aficionado of etymology. I just love reading about the roots of certain words. There is a ton of great reading on this subject online too. Of course, you need to have a good BS filter with some word origins—they’re more urban legends than they are fact.

One word seems rather obvious though as to its roots….

REFORM

RE-

-FORM

It means to make new. To make again. To correct and fashion with thought.

Josiah sought the reformation of the temple, because it had become a den of sordid wackiness.

The metaphor of reform extends to our lives in that we can always do better. There is always time to mend. Having gone through addiction and recovery, I can attest that reforming wasn’t easy. But in the end it was worth and and very necessary.

Reform my life for this day, O God. Re-make me in your image. Amen.
