2 Kings 23:21-27, The Passover Celebrated

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

The king commanded all the people, ‘Keep the passover to the Lord your God as prescribed in this book of the covenant.’ No such passover had been kept since the days of the judges who judged Israel, even during all the days of the kings of Israel and of the kings of Judah.

Ritual is powerful. It connects us, give us identity, grounds us in our faith. For King Josiah’s people, the reinstatement of the observance of Passover after a century or more was a reminder of who the Israelite’s were and, more importantly, whose they were. They needed to remember what God had done for them—freed them from slavery in Egypt and given them their own land.

When we gather to sing and pray together, to listen to God’s Word, and to share bread and wine in Holy Communion, we are drawn into community. We are reminded who we are and whose we are. We are fed spiritually, refreshed and restored to go out into the world and live our identity as children of God in all we do and say.
