Romans 12:9-21, Marks of the True Christian

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all. If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.
— Romans 12:17-18

This whole passage is an impressive list of all the things we will do if we are “true Christians.” And let me tell you, it’s a daunting list! But what it all seems to center around is the idea of community. The “true Christian” will understand the interdependence of God’s beloved family, and strive to live in peace and harmony with all.

This isn’t something human society is particularly good at. A quick glance at the news will show you that. As Christians, we are called to be distinct from this. Stories of the early church talk about how Christians shared all things in common. It was said that you could recognize Christians by their love for one another.

Faith comes about through relationships with other believers. If we can learn to live in harmony with our fellow congregation members, we can take that practice into the world at large. And they will know we are Christians by our love.

Gathering God, inspire me to live in your blessed community in the way you would call me to live.
