Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

At first blush, much of scripture seems to fall into the broad category of “moralism.” The fact of the matter is much of scripture seems on the surface to say, “Do this; not that.” Although there is a hint of truth that the Bible is meant to be a moral guide for people, many often miss the message of grace that is deeply embedded within what is “right or wrong.”
Our baptisms were intended as the beginning of a new life for us. In the ancient church, followers of Jesus saw this more plainly, since the majority of new followers of the Way were converts. Now, baptism takes on a role much more like “christening” or “blessing” than it signifies a radical death and rebirth into the God’s grace.
I’m not arguing either way for or against infant baptism. Personally, I believe in it. However, it’s very easy to miss the message of newness with our children. I know that our family is continually challenged to proclaim a new life in Christ over against what was before. But . . . for little kids, many of them don’t know about what was before to begin with.
Regardless of your take on baptism or another polity followed in your faith community, one thing is for certain—God wants us to continually live renewal, daily dying to sin and rising in Christ.
How do you live out a new life in Christ daily?
