Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

I find it particularly fascinating that holy scripture can at times be so perfectly blunt about things. As a leading rubric to this particular Psalm, the psalmist tells us exactly what David had done: he “went into” Bathsheba. Yup. After he had sex with her . . . this is what he said when Nathan confronted him.
Perhaps we see such honesty in the Bible, because life is real. And scripture should deal with real situations.
The main point of today’s reading I believe is not so much what David had done (although it’s important we remember that, as readers). The point of today’s reading is showing the contrite heart that David was forced to produce after he was called to task. Also, of course, another theme would be God’s grace and willingness to deal with us sinners.
Even David…
Am I contrite when others call me to task. Why do I become defensive when God stands at the ready to forgive and move on?
