Is not this the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas?

They say that familiarity breeds contempt. Might it be a possibility that familiarity also denies the possibility that God might be working in the very people we think we know so well?

The populace of Nazareth knew Jesus as a little kid. They knew him when he ran around playing with the other children. And then, all of the sudden, he showed up again as this peripatetic rabbi who spoke in strange parables. What were they to think?

Was it possible that God could work through a person they thought they were already so familiar with?

Well, is it?!

God, you bring about your reign through many and various people. We often miss the wonders of your ways. Remind us to keep our ears and eyes open knowing that your grace sometimes comes in the most surprising of places. Amen.
