There are two basic functions of Holy Scripture. One (and the most important one) is sharing what God has done throughout history, and the way God deals with us through the person of Jesus Christ. The second is to make us begin to think and act in accordance with what God wants from us.

Often the order of importance of these two functions gets turned around, if not outright blatantly then at least in the way we act. But the fact remains that scripture’s main purpose is to tell God’s story NOT as a giant book of moralistic rules.

In certain cases, the morality of the actors in the Bible stories are dubious at best . . . at least in our context. However, some things are timeless, too. One timeless aspect is knowing that it’s just not US that God lifts up, but also others. And sometimes those “others” need lifting up more than we do.

How do you lift up your neighbors, regardless who they are? How can you enact God’s justice here on earth?
