Nahum 1:1-11, Nahum Prophesies of God’s Wrath

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

The Lord is good, a stronghold in a day of trouble; he protects those who take refuge in him, even in a rushing flood. He will make a full end of his adversaries, and will pursue his enemies into darkness.
Why do you plot against the Lord? He will make an end; no adversary will rise up twice. Like thorns they are entangled, like drunkards they are drunk; they are consumed like dry straw.
— Nahum 1:7-10

NL Daily Devotion for Tuesday, November 10, 2020

by Dr. Kimberly Leetch, Clergy Stuff

Note: This devotion was originally written in 2016. It’s surprising how far, or how little, we’ve come. (Depending on how you look at it.)

Although it was not intentional, it is fitting that this is the text for the time around which the US elects a new president. This has been such a fiery, nasty, and ugly campaign. Just today I saw a news report about a woman who put an election sign in her yard that read, “Make America Kind Again.” She made up signs and totes and has sold out of them on her Etsy website.

People are craving kindness. People are desperate for positivity. Like the Israelites who were accustomed to a community that was living far from God’s will, it seems our community, our nation, has become accustomed to living far from God’s will.

Let us pray and hope that we become part of the solution that makes this entire world kind, just, peaceful, and loving.
