One thing that strikes me in this reading that you often see in the writings of the prophets — Habakkuk, like others before him, remind God of God’s great acts, all while submitting the prophet’s own petitions.

Does God need reminding? Probably not. Then why include this information? Was it for the benefit of the prophet himself? Or, was it more a back and forth conversation between God and the prophet, wherein the prophet reiterates God’s great acts so as to contextualize God’s works within the prophet’s own needs, worries, and prayers?

Whatever the case, we now have what we have today as it had been set down, thousands of years ago. Maybe we can take a cue from this template in our own prayers. We can remind God, and ourselves, all the things God has done for us, so that we can better understand what God is doing, today.

God, I remember the great things you’ve done for me. Here they are: . . . . thank you! Amen.
