Main Idea: There will be doubters. What might we learn from them?
Jesus has been raised from the dead! As he promised, he met the disciples in Galilee. There, he gave his disciples a mission... “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you.”
His command was to bring the word to all nations. To bring baptism to all nations. To teach all nations to obey. Interestingly, when some of Jesus’ disciples worshiped, others doubted. Yet Jesus did not condemn those who doubted. He simply let them be, even as they stood amid the commissioned.
It was probably a great visual aid for the disciples. When one is preaching the word to all the nations of the earth, it is certain there will be doubters amid the conversation. But in letting his doubters be, Jesus modeled an invitation to be accepted or denied, but given nonetheless.
Sometimes we think we have to convert everyone we know. Perhaps we are simply called to share our stories and leave the converting to Jesus. We can continue to share our stories, even when there are those in our midst who doubt, or who have different faith traditions from us. Perhaps they have been called to share their stories with us, even as we doubt. What might happen if all who share their stories also take time and intention to hear the stories of others? How might our own faith lives be enriched as we learn of the faith practices of others?
O Lord, sometimes we still question your presence, even when you are right in front of us. Fill us with faith in believing your promises, simply because you are trustworthy. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
