Acts 5:17-42, The Apostles are Persecuted

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Peter and the apostles answered, ‘We must obey God rather than any human authority.’
— Acts 5:29

Jesus warned the Apostles that sharing the gospel would result in their persecution. And so it does, though it begins slowly. At first the authorities are convinced by Gamaliel the Pharisee that if this Jesus thing is just another in a long string of short-lived movements, it will simply die and disappear if they leave it alone. If it won’t die, then maybe it truly is God’s truth! This even-handed response would soon be discarded, giving way to ever-more violent persecutions.

Persecution still happens. In some places, people are attacked simply for claiming Jesus. In other places, people are undermined and thwarted for doing as Christ would have us, in standing up for justice on behalf of the oppressed.

These strong words of Peter are a reminder of the only One who has true authority, the same One who will sustain us in our call.

Lord Jesus, give me discernment and courage in choosing to serve you alone.
