Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

The poor fig tree! Of course, after all, it hadn’t fed Jesus when he was hungry. But it wasn’t the fig tree’s fault!
I’m missing the point of this story, I believe. Right?
Yes. I am.
What Jesus describes here is an allegory to make a difference in the world, even when it doesn’t seem to be “your time.”
That, too, and it’s a lesson of faith.
In fact, the whole Greek sentence structure of Jesus’ description with the mountain tossing itself into the sea is odd enough to show that real faith must be hard to come by. (Even in English it’s an odd sentence: “Be lifted up and thrown into the sea…”)
Faith—and real faith—is always something one needs to strive towards.
Thank you, dear God, for the gift of faith. Amen.
