Mark 15:16-39, Crucifixion

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

At three o’clock Jesus cried out with a loud voice, ‘Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?’ which means, ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’

NL Daily Devotion for Friday, April 10, 2020

Jesus’ cry is our cry. Most, if not all of us have felt at one time or another that we have been completely abandoned by God. Yet God has always been right there with us, suffering with us, feeling our pain, even our abandonment. In Jesus we see this in the flesh, and recognize God’s willingness to come to us as one of us, to suffer as one of us, and to feel the agony of abandonment in a new way. Personally, I believe God the creator and God the Holy Spirit’s arms were around Jesus in that moment, though he could not recognize it, just as God’s arms are around us in those moments we feel most alone.

Loving God, help me to recognize your compassionate presence with me no matter what is happening in my life. Amen.
