Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today
“While they were eating, he took a loaf of bread, and after blessing it he broke it, gave it to them, and said, ‘Take; this is my body. Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he gave it to them, and all of them drank from it. He said to them, ‘This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many.’”

Entire books have been written on these two verses. So I won’t try to distill it down or oversimplify it in a short little devotion. The truth is that the incredible grace and love, the unfathomable invitation and exhortation contained in Jesus’ act can never be completely comprehended. All I can do is continue to answer the invitation and be drawn into Jesus’ presence in holy communion as often as I take it, trusting that God, who is welcoming mystery, will hold the fullness of its meaning until such time as I can ask God about it directly.
What does the sacrament of holy communion mean to me?
