Mark 15:40-47, The Death and Burial of Jesus

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the council, who was also himself waiting expectantly for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.

NL Daily Devotion for Saturday, April 11, 2020

by R. Fergus Moir, Clergy Stuff

This Joseph dude had a lot of nerve. He was a high-ranking Jew who waltzed up to the Roman governor and asked for the body of a rabble-rouser. This could have been political suicide at the very least, but he did it “boldly.” Why? Because he knew who Jesus was, and knew this act of respect for Jesus was required of him.

What are we called to do “boldly” in our lives to demonstrate that we know and respect Jesus? Where do we need to show the kind of boundary-crossing love he did, the willingness to sacrifice in service to the powerless and oppressed, even at risk of our reputations?

Gracious God, give me the bold spirit of Joseph of Arimathea, to answer your call to me. Amen.
