I wonder whether Peter knew what he was doing, denying Jesus. Here he was, all set to be the first Pope, and off he goes saying, “Hey! You got it wrong—I’m not one of them.”

I often wonder whether Peter’s denial is permission giving for us to deny. Don’t misread my statement: I’m not saying that denial is a good thing. What I’m saying is that if Peter himself, the most passionate and devout follower of Jesus could deny his leader, then perhaps God knows the fragility of humanity more than we realize.

What are your views? Was Peter’s denial and Jesus’ foreknowledge of it an admission that God knows us?
