Luke 6:17-19, Jesus Heals

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

They had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; and those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured.
— Luke 6:18

NL Daily Devotion for Thursday, January 30, 2020

by R. Fergus Moir, Clergy Stuff

We are, all of us, sick and troubled with unclean spirits. We are daily bombarded with messages telling us we are not enough, we do not have enough, we must protect and defend ourselves and our possessions against anyone and everyone who challenges us. In the midst of it, there is an emptiness, a hole in our spirits that aches for connection with God and with one another. But the noise of life drowns out that call, and we find ourselves lost and bewildered, unable to grasp why we are so restless, irritable, and discontent.

This is when we need to go to hear Jesus and to be cured of our worldly illnesses and unclean spirits. This is when we need to be enfolded in a church community, to sit at the feet of Jesus and listen, to quiet the cacophony of our broken world and pay attention to that still, small voice of God reaching out to connect, to embrace, to heal. And God’s Word promises that, just as the crowds gathered around Jesus, we will be cured.

Healing God, draw me into community with you, and silence the turmoil in my heart. Amen.
