Luke 8:31-41, Jesus Casts out Demons (Yet Another Demoniac & Another Healing)

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

They begged him not to order them to go back into the abyss.

Now there on the hillside a large herd of swine was feeding; and the demons begged Jesus to let them enter these. So he gave them permission. Then the demons came out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned.

Once again, here we go, again! I think it’s interesting that this story of the healing of the demoniac occurs in three gospels (John doesn’t have it).

What’s particularly grabbing is that, in all three accounts, it stresses the nature of the one healed, that he is a social outcast. Jesus specifically reaches out his hand to heal this one, not just of his mental illness (or demon possession, if you like). What’s great is that Jesus risks himself being called a social outcast for even being here with this man!

Jesus saves, always. Go back and read the other two accounts from this week and look for similarities and differences.

Amen!
