Jeremiah 1:4-10, I Am Only a Boy

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Then I said, “Ah, Lord God! Truly I do not know how to speak, for I am only a boy.”
— Jeremiah 1:6

NL Daily Devotion for Tuesday, December 3, 2019

by Daniel D. Maurer, Clergy Stuff

Growing up as a young boy in suburban Minneapolis in the late 70s and early 80s, I always believed that there were actually two planes of existence. What might seem an overly existential for a ten-year-old kid, I was a dreamer. I honestly believed that the world in my head (and ostensibly in others’ heads, too) was a real plane of existence.

Of course, there was the everyday, but the “real” world was the dreamy world of my imagination.

As I grew, my conception of reality became more grounded in my daily experiences. How I today yearn, painfully, to return to those carefree days of my youth!

The fact is, I might have been on to something that is more real than any of us conceive. What if the world of our imaginations and that of the infinite is actually the “real” world. What if children ruled, not to subdue others, but to show how great and encompassing love is?

Perhaps children would direct us to the real Jesus, the real God of love? What are your thoughts?
