One point I strive to emphasize when I am teaching a course or leading a Bible study of scripture is that the books of the Bible are literature, too. The Bible wasn’t just handed down from on high on a string, like a change of scenery in a kid’s puppet show. Writing at that time (throughout many periods, actually) depended on writers to creatively convey their thoughts.
What better way to do this through story and creative examples!
The use of metaphor and allegory is particular powerful in relating to others in prophecy.,
We’ve all see a boiling kettle on a stove before. We know it’s dangerous and that we should be careful, because our mothers instructed us so. At the same time, the commonplace image of something cooking over a fire or a hearth at home promises to be an image all can relate to.
So, too, did the prophets want to connect with their audiences in the best way possible.
What image do you see when you think of a prophecy using an image like a boiling pot?
