Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today
NL Daily Devotion for Wednesday, May 1, 2019

I remember leaving May Day baskets as a child. I thought it was fun, but also very strange.
Basically, you make a treat basket and play a game of ding dong ditch.
The treats were nice, but the goal was to trick the people. Make sure they don’t know who this was from. It never made sense to me. Don’t you want to know who is doing this nice thing?
Philip and Simon are both doing miracles - but one of them is doing these miracles in the name of God, and one is doing them as a means of trickery.
Maybe a May Day basket isn’t the worst form of trickery - but I think what I read in this text is that honesty and straightforward messages are what is best for our ministry!
Do you like magic tricks or anonymous gifts? Why or why not? How can we tell between tricks and miracles?
