2 Kings 22:14-20, Hilkiah Finds the Book of the Law, Part II

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Therefore, I will gather you to your ancestors, and you shall be gathered to your grave in peace; your eyes shall not see all the disaster that I will bring on this place.’ They took the message back to the king.

I find that as I grow older, I need to search more to find something delightful. As a kid, everything was delightful. Well, not doing the dishes, but you know what I mean.

Novelty breeds delight in most people, because it is new and wonderful (most of the time). Just look at the picture of the little girl watching the hot-air balloons and tell me whether I’ve put my finger on something.

One of the difficulties we moderns struggle with, though, is that we are on a never-ending search for the new and the novel. The wonderful. It’s a side effect of our consumer culture.

Perhaps, it would be helpful, if sometimes we returned to our roots to find the lovely in that. Returning to God can be a similar experience, too.

How do you return to God?
