1 Kings 19:11-18, Elijah Meets God at Horeb

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

He said, ‘Go out and stand on the mountain before the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.’ Now there was a great wind, so strong that it was splitting mountains and breaking rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a sound of sheer silence.

I am an un-subtle person. What you see and what you hear is what you get and what I mean. I want the same thing from God. When I face indecision or need encouragement, I want the great wind, the earthquake, the fire to proclaim to me God’s presence and announce to me God’s answer. But really, that just means I’m not a particularly good listener. I don’t want to be quiet and wait. I just want to go go go and do do do—and right now now now!

Yet when I settle down, quiet my heart and mind and listen, I often find that God isn’t subtle at all. I get the clear indication of what I’m supposed to be doing and I get the inspiration and encouragement I need to do it.

After all, following a howling wind, rumbling earthquake, and roaring fire, complete silence is about the most un-subtle thing you can imagine.

Gracious God, quiet my mind and heart that I might find you in the stillness. Amen.
