1 Kings 19:1-10, Elijah Flees from Jezebel

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a solitary broom tree. He asked that he might die: ‘It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life, for I am no better than my ancestors.’ Then he lay down under the broom tree and fell asleep.

Even Elijah got discouraged. He had done everything God asked him to do. Worked a miracle that proved unequivocally that God was greater than Baal. He was sure the Israelites would immediately change their ways and return to God. But that’s not what happened, and Elijah felt let down. More than just let down: despairing.

So when we’re feeling frustrated, as though we are doing all that God asks of us, yet getting nowhere, we can remember that we’re not alone. Elijah was God’s greatest prophet, intimately connected to God, faithful and powerful, and even he found himself wanting to give up.

In the end, God gave Elijah strength and encouragement, a mission and a helper. Elijah remembered he was not alone, and that God was at work in what he did, whether he saw any results himself or not. God gives us that same strength and encouragement, purpose and assistance. We are not alone, no matter how we feel.

Where do I see God’s presence, even when I am discouraged?
