2 Kings 9:30-37, Jezebel’s Violent Death

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

He said, ‘Throw her down.’ So they threw her down; some of her blood spattered on the wall and on the horses, which trampled on her. Then he went in and ate and drank.

by R. Fergus Moir, Clergy Stuff

Oh, come on! We’re supposed to root for this guy Jehu, the new King of Israel? Now I get that Jezebel was a truly horrible person, responsible for the deaths of hundreds of God’s prophets. But the graphic depiction of her violent death juxtaposed with Jehu’s casual retreat to the dining hall leave me a little cold. How are we supposed to find some sign of God’s presence upon which to meditate here?

Maybe we’re not. Despite passages like this throughout the Old Testament, bolstered by passages claiming such things are ordained by God, maybe we’re just supposed to see example after example of just how irredeemable human kings and rulers are so that when we happen at last upon the gospel of redemption in Jesus Christ, we are blown away by the total impossibility of it all.

Redeeming God, remind me that I cannot be worthy of your grace and love, yet you give it freely anyway. Amen.
