The brightness was like the sun; rays came forth from his hand, where his power lay hidden.

The prophet Habakkuk could see the end of his enemies, the destruction he envisioned that God would rain down upon them. It came with fire, pestilence, and plague. They would one day be utterly destroyed.

We too, can rely upon the power of God to destroy our enemies. But today, let’s not pray for the utter destruction of our human enemies. All people are God’s children. God has no desire to slay any of God’s infants.

Our enemies then, are not human but are all around us. They include poverty, violence (the acts, not the people, are in need of destruction), injustice, pride, greed, jealousy, codependence, addiction, and so many other afflictions that torment us. We can hold onto hope that God can and will one day free us from these bitter enemies.

Narrative Lectionary Daily Reading:

Habakkuk 3:1-7

A prayer of the prophet Habakkuk according to Shigionoth. O Lord, I have heard of your renown, and I stand in awe, O Lord, of your work. In our own time revive it; in our own time make it known; in wrath may you remember mercy.

God came from Teman, the Holy One from Mount Paran. Selah

His glory covered the heavens, and the earth was full of his praise. The brightness was like the sun; rays came forth from his hand, where his power lay hidden. Before him went pestilence, and plague followed close behind. He stopped and shook the earth; he looked and made the nations tremble. The eternal mountains were shattered; along his ancient pathways the everlasting hills sank low. I saw the tents of Cushan under affliction; the tent-curtains of the land of Midian trembled.
