sarah laughs

by Dr. Kimberly Leetch, Clergy Stuff

Lest you think the Bible is a super-serious book of fuddy-duddys, in reality the Bible is full of fun stories, quirky happenings, and laughter! Like this story of Sarah, who named her son, "laughter" -- well, actually "Isaac" (which means "he laughs".) The text suggests it was Sarah who was laughing. But the the name, Isaac, suggests maybe it was God who was laughing. Picture it-- God laughing! I like it.

Fun fact: I wanted to name my second kid after "laughter" like Sarah did with Isaac. I wanted to name him, "Luke Owen Leetch" so his initials would be LOL. I was overruled. (I can't tell you his middle name 'cause middle names are sacred territory, but I can tell you it starts with "A." LAL does't mean anything.) We did name him "Luke" after the Gospel -- ok, that's a lie. We actually named him after Luke Skywalker, and it's still a super cool name! May the force be with you.

We could all use more laughter in our lives. It's easy to get bogged down in the serious stuff -- paying bills, maintaining good health, holding a job. But without the fun, what's the point? God laughed a lot. There are stories all over the Bible of fun, odd, and quirky things God did. Laughter is good for us and is one of the best qualities God created in us.

Narrative Lectionary Daily Reading:

Genesis 21:1-7

The Lord dealt with Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah as he had promised. Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the time of which God had spoken to him. Abraham gave the name Isaac to his son whom Sarah bore him. And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old, as God had commanded him. Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him. Now Sarah said, “God has brought laughter for me; everyone who hears will laugh with me.” And she said, “Who would ever have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.”
