Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today
“For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption.”

I have amazing parents. I just do. They have been so loving and supportive of me my entire life that it’s not at all difficult to love and care for them. They have taught and inspired, nurtured and equipped me, and even though I’m 48 and a fully functioning independent adult, I love being with them and am so grateful to have them in my life. So I want to be of service to them in whatever ways I can, to be kind and generous to them, to spend time with them. If I had reason to fear them, it might be a lot harder to have a relationship with them.
God is a perfect parent, of whom even my excellent parents are but a pale comparison. God calls us into an intimate, loving, covenant relationship not based on fear, but on full acceptance. Knowing this, shouldn’t it be easier to live a life of love and service to God and neighbor, rather than focusing on material possessions or the cares and worries of life? Well…adopted as God’s children we may be, but we’re still human. Luckily, just as with wayward children, God as our parent will wait, and love us no matter what.
What does it mean to me to have received a ‘spirit of adoption?’
