Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today
“Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, a descendant of David—that is my gospel, for which I suffer hardship, even to the point of being chained like a criminal. But the word of God is not chained.”

I’ll be honest. I do NOT like military imagery, even though I get this is contextual. So I’ll stick to the most powerful sentence in the text: The word of God is not chained. Here’s the thing: we’re limited. God is not. We may have all kinds of barriers to overcome, ways in which the world tries to keep us from sharing God’s truth, from acting on behalf of the marginalized, from working to change unjust systems. As individuals, we may not be able to succeed. But nothing holds God back. As a former pastor of mine was fond of saying, “God is on the loose!” Regardless of the barriers, we are called to press on, knowing God is in charge, to follow where God leads, to proclaim God’s healing love. Even in prison, Paul continued to proclaim the good news, just as did Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Let nothing hold us back from God’s call, just as nothing can hold back the word of God.
What is holding me back from heeding God’s call?
