Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today
NL Daily Devotion for Tuesday, May 28, 2019
by Daniel D. Maurer, Clergy Stuff
As a person in recovery from addiction to drugs and alcohol, I can state without hesitation that I know exactly what a bondage to sin feels like. Some people do not have this gift. Many others believe that addiction is only a choice that you make. I know differently—that the impossible position a person is thrust into, living day-in and day-out, the hell they never thought they would experience.
The gift of recovery was given to me through a ton of hard work, and people who responded to my addiction as a health crisis, rather than a moral failure. Suddenly, I understood with perfect clarity how I had been freed from my bondage.
I firmly believe that people who have experienced such freedom have an opportunity to share their understanding with others. In my own life, that means that I speak publicly about addiction and about the hope of recovery.
In my spiritual life, I know that it was God who ultimately saved me and delivered me to mercy.
Being a new “slave to righteousness” isn’t a new bondage, either. It’s instead a daily gift to remind myself of where I came from and where I’m going to, for today.
God, thank you for giving me a new identity in your love. Release me from the bonds of sin. Grant me new life, daily. Amen.
