Romans 5:12-21, Adam and Christ

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

If, because of the one man’s trespass, death exercised dominion through that one, much more surely will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness exercise dominion in life through the one man, Jesus Christ.

Paul’s logic often escapes me. Take a look at today’s reading.

So, let me get this right…

Since Adam was one man who condemned us all because of his acts of disobedience, so, too, does another man’s (Jesus’) act of obedience make us whole. Right?

Why?! I don’t get it.

The pieces of the puzzle don’t always seem to fit together!

But what I forget is that I don’t need to see it all clearly right now. If Paul’s formulaic expositions don’t make sense to me, read them again and make the connection that God works within and from without to make us whole meant everything to Paul.

Sometime the text can stand on its own. We don’t need to understand all to understand the message of God’s love.

Open my eyes and ears to see and hear your actions not only back then, but also for today in my own life, God. Amen.
