Romans 5:1-5, Justified by Faith

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.
— Romans 5:5

NL Daily Devotion for Friday, September 6, 2019

by R. Fergus Moir, Clergy Stuff

It can be hard to have hope. My 20-year-old daughter reads about the state of the world, especially the environment, and despairs for the future. I don’t always know what to tell her. We can’t rest on our laurels and do nothing, but we can’t fix everything by working on it ourselves, or by just wanting it fixed.

My hope is in God through the Holy Spirit. I know that whatever happens, through no effort of my own, God is present in and through me, leading and guiding me. I can have hope because I know that God is in charge. I can ask God for clarity about my next right action, and trust that if I do what is mine, God will take care of the rest.

Gracious God, help me to take the action you would have me take, and help me to trust all outcomes to you. Amen.
