1 Corinthians 12:1-26, Gifts of the Spirit

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

If one member suffers, all suffer together with it; if one member is honored, all rejoice together with it.
— 1 Corinthians 12:26

NL Daily Devotion for Saturday, September 7, 2019

by R. Fergus Moir, Clergy Stuff

Everyone is important. We all have different gifts. Some are showier than others, and people tend to assign those more value. But the quieter, humbler gifts matter, often more than the showy ones. We are truly interdependent, needing one another’s unique gifts in order for us to be whole. Thus is the nature of Christian community.

Because everyone is equally important, and interdependent, when one of us suffers, all of us suffer together. When someone in our community hurts, we rally around them, supporting them and sharing the burden. Not only does this help the individual experiencing pain or loss, but it strengthens all of us as we love and serve one another in Christ. There is something indescribably beautiful about this. What a true gift of the Holy Spirit!

Loving God, keep me mindful of my interdependence with others, that I might share in the joys and burdens of the whole human family. Amen.
