Psalm 32, We're Nothing Like a Horses

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Do not be like a horse or a mule, without understanding,
whose temper must be curbed with bit and bridle,
else it will not stay near you.
— Psalm 32:9

If you’ve never experienced riding a horse, I encourage you to try it sometime. Although it can be a daunting experience—after all, you’re on top of a vehicle with its own brain—it can also show you that there is a reason why human beings were created to live within community.

To safely ride a horse, a rider needs to be sensitive to the horse’s emotions and state of mind. Unlike a horse, as human beings, we can also rationalize and think beyond simply getting from point A to point B.

For us to successfully navigate through life, we need God and we need others. The good news comes when we realize that we are not alone.

Thank you, God, that you have given me faculties to think beyond what my instinctual needs are and seek only you. Amen.
