Throughout the late 60s and early 70s, there was a movement for parents to raise their children with self-esteem. I grew up at that time and I’m a part of the ME generation. Like many things in life, the idea started as something well-meaning, but became twisted and unintentionally damaging in some ways.
Kids were told that they were “special,” that, in fact, EVERY child was special. Was this right? Well . . . .yeah. Except not, too.
A whole generation became convinced that they were more valuable than anyone else. Of course, this is an overt generalization, but there’s truth to it too.
Scripture reminds us that, ultimately, all we have to take pride in is our connection with God, that our special chariots and our well-groomed horses will one day come to naught.
God will always be there. I suppose a person could take this as judgment, but it doesn’t have to be that way. It can also be good news, that we don’t have to be the center of the universe, because there is One who already fills that spot.
