Psalm 122, Psalm of Praise

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go to the house of the Lord!”
— Psalm 122:1

NL Daily Devotion for Friday, June 21, 2019

by R. Fergus Moir, Clergy Stuff

I grew up in a little church in suburban New York. Those people were my extended family. My parents never had to wonder where I was, with all these surrogate aunts and uncles and cousins keeping their eyes on me. Sundays were days of joy—fun in Sunday School with my friends, singing hymns in church, running downstairs after worship for coffee cake, and then tripping outside to play touch football or tag in the old graveyard. Maybe I was a weird kid, but I was always glad when they said unto me, “Let us go to the house of the Lord!”

Of course, God doesn’t live in a house made by human hands. God is everywhere in existence, in the faces of our neighbors, in the majesty of nature. But wherever two or three are gathered in Jesus’ name, God is there among them, and someone’s living room can become the house of the Lord. May we all be so glad to come into God’s presence with one another!

Loving God, fill me with joy as I go to worship you in the beloved community of your people.
