Psalm 111, In the Company of the Upright

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Praise the Lord! I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart, in the company of the upright, in the congregation.
— Psalm 111:1

NL Daily Devotion for Thursday, June 20, 2019

by Daniel D. Maurer, Clergy Stuff

Human beings were created to live in community with each other.

Today, communities can signify and represent many different levels. For example, I am a US citizen, but I am also a father, a resident of Saint Paul, Minnesota, and I belong to Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. I’m also a member of the Loft Literary Center and enjoy attending book and/or writer events.

Each of these different communities represent varying interests and identities. Sometimes these identities can clash. In today’s world, that seems to happen more often than not. Communities online, especially, can quickly degrade into tribalism and name-calling.

God’s purpose, I believe, is not that we all worship and believe the same way, or God forbid, even have the same interests! God’s wish is that we might see that we are a community of human beings, no matter where we’re from. I believe Jesus did not so much want to start a new religion, but instead to reinterpret or redefine what our relationships were with each other.

We are human beings. Period. Brothers, sisters, we go forth trusting that God’s story might one day make us all one.
