Psalm 150, Psalm of Praise

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Praise him with trumpet sound; praise him with lute and harp!
Praise him with tambourine and dance; praise him with strings and pipe!
Praise him with clanging cymbals; praise him with loud clashing cymbals!
— Psalm 150:3-5

NL Daily Devotion for Saturday, June 22, 2019

by R. Fergus Moir, Clergy Stuff

As a kid, I was encouraged to memorize Bible verses to recite in Sunday School. Psalm 150 was the second one I learned and it is still one of my favorites. It speaks to me so powerfully as one for whom music is so central to my being. I have always sung and played instruments, loved listening to music; there is nothing more wonderful to me than making a “joyful noise to the Lord.”

And this is just one of many Psalms that use musical imagery to show praise—not just people praising God, but all of creation singing praise. There is much joy to be found here, and inspiration for all of us to use our voices and hands to proclaim our love and gratitude for the One who made us and who cares for us in all things.

Awesome God, inspire me to declare your goodness to the world in joyful song! Amen.
