Psalm 121, Help Comes From God

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

I lift up my eyes to the hills— from where will my help come?
My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.
— Psalm 121:1-2

I saw the Rocky Mountains for the first time just a couple years ago. We’d been driving in a straight line forever across what seemed like completely flat land. Then all of a sudden, in the hazy distance, I could make out the jagged outline of dramatic mountains soaring into the pale sky. My stomach flipped, and I was filled with excitement and anticipation. It seemed like such a bizarre response to a bunch of rocks.

I get why the ancients worshipped God (and gods) on mountains and in “ the high places.” I actually did feel closer to God with those incredible hills all around me. And while I live in Minnesota (we don’t really do mountains) that experience in Colorado still comes to mind when I think of this well-known psalm. I know my help—that is, God—doesn’t literally come from higher elevations, but I also know that when I feel connected to God, when I cry out to God and God answers me, I have that same awe-filled wonder that I had on that summer day a couple of years ago when the Rockies appeared from the haze.

Have I experienced a “mountaintop moment” with God?
