Psalm 10, Where is God?

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Why, O Lord, do you stand far off? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?
In arrogance the wicked persecute the poor— let them be caught in the schemes they have devised.
— Psalm 10:1-2

Sometimes I wonder where God is. I think we probably all do. Like the psalmist, I see injustice everywhere, and feel completely powerless to change anything. I mean, sure, there are actions I can and do take, but lots and lots of people have dedicated their lives to working for justice and so little seems to change.

I think it’s natural to question God. And, in fact, the Psalms are full of laments that do just this. Lament is important. It’s not just complaining. It’s calling God to account for God’s promises. It’s stepping into the covenant relationship with God—a two-way street. And it’s the path through the pain and frustration and alienation into action.

Where are you, God? The world is a mess. Ah, God, I am in conversation with you, thus you are right here with me. You call me to account for my own part in the mess and uplift and inspire me, equipping me for necessary action.

God, when I feel you are far off, in fact you are wholly present. Give me the power I need to work for your justice in the world. Amen.
