Matthew 6:25-34, Teachings of Jesus

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?

When I was a kid, I loved to look up into the sky. I especially enjoyed gazing into the heavens when it was late in the evening, just before the sun had set.

I suppose I enjoyed it so much, because it seemed that my petty worries weren’t quite as important as I set them out to be—the sky was so deep, so blue, so BIG, that I didn’t have to think about my struggles at all.

Perhaps Jesus really had caught onto something when he referenced the “birds of the air” (a phrase used in Hebrew to differentiate between the “birds of the ground” like ostriches). Birds are UP THERE; they have no worries, because they live in the very expanse that God had created! It’s something to emulate.
