Matthew 28:11-15, The Report of the Guard

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

So they took the money and did as they were directed. And this story is still told among the Jews to this day.
— Matthew 28:11-15

NL Daily Devotion for Tuesday, April 23, 2019

Several things are going on with today’s reading. For one, it shows an inherent bias in Matthew against Jewish communities that rejected early Christians. Antisemitism’s roots go (and grow) deep. They begin here.

The other thing going on is what would it have been like had Jesus come in this modern era in which we live, with cameras, the internet, and easily documented “proof” . . . would it have been easier or harder for the disciples to attest to Jesus’ dying and rising?

If you read many of my devotions, you’ll notice that often I’ll end with a question. I hope this doesn’t annoy you. There’s a reason behind it though. I believe often that the best spiritual growth always happens with the questions, not pat answers.

So it’s your turn.

What do you think? Would you be more apt to believe if we had “video proof” of Jesus’ resurrection?

[Finish with a prayer written in the first-person or a question you pose to the reader about the text.]
