Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today
NL Daily Devotion for Saturday, April 20, 2019
by R. Fergus Moir, Clergy Stuff
I remember when my brother discovered that my parents were Santa Claus. He snuck down from his room early Christmas morning and watched them put the presents around the tree. Of course, he then had to let all three of his younger siblings in on the deception. He would not let us be fooled!
No one really believed Jesus would rise from the dead—what a ridiculous concept! But the Romans weren’t going to be fooled. If the disciples were going to sneak into the tomb and remove the body so they could say, “I told you so!” then the Romans were going to catch them in the act.
It was in vain, of course. No securing of the stone, no posting of the guard, could prevent the truth from breaking free.
I am sometimes tempted to allow doubt to leak into my life of faith. After all, I’m an intelligent, rational person. I would hate to be “fooled.” Hah! How silly to think that my limited intellect could keep God’s eternal truth and love sealed away!
Eternal and holy God, burst forth from the confines of my sinful heart and fill the world with your boundless love.
