Matthew 26:6-13, The Anointing at Bethany

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

I want to be the one to decide. I want to decide what is and is not a worthy use of resources in God’s kingdom. Like the disciples, I am incensed when I see what I judge to be a waste of time or money or energy.

I usually judge such things without having all the facts.

And the fact is that God’s love is extravagant. What God, in Christ Jesus, endured for the sake of lavishing eternal life upon us is no less than prodigal. How can we not respond in kind, giving of all we have and are to serve God and our neighbor?

This one woman chose to pour out her heart along with her ointment to prepare Jesus for his sacrifice, and it is deemed a worthy gift.

I cannot give enough to the work of the kingdom, therefore I surely cannot give too much.

Where might I offer my resources to God’s healing justice in the world?
