Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

To betray means “to deliver someone to an enemy,” which is what Judas agrees to do. But the word has broader meanings, including “to fail or desert, especially in time of need.”
How easy it is for us to betray Jesus. To fail or desert him, especially in this time of so much need, where Jesus is present in each of us, including “the least of these,” the oppressed and downtrodden, the hungry and imprisoned.
For Judas, it came down to money. And so it is today, where money is seen as the god who will deliver us from all our difficulties. How often do I fail to act on behalf of my neighbor in the name of my own comfort?
God, liberate me from my reliance on anything other than you, that I may not betray your call to serve and love you.
